私は今回の授賞式、そして人々の生活を豊かにするために国内外で犠牲を払って労しておられる多くの方々との素晴らしい出会いに、感謝しております。

私は、1985年に、夫と小さな子どもたち3人とともにプロテスタントのキリスト教宣教師として来日しました。子どもが大好きで、来日してから私たち夫婦は更に二人の子どもたちに恵まれました。。私は米国で理学療法士としての教育、妊娠カウンセラーの訓練を受け、来日前の10年間は、障がい児のための病院／在宅ケアの理学療法士として勤務しておりました。私は、日本に住むクリスチャンとして日本人に対する神様の愛について考えた時、予期せぬ妊娠をした女性とその子供達の必要に気がつきました。聖書では、子どもは皆、神からの賜物であり、神は孤児にとっての父親、やもめ、孤児、外国人を守る神、孤独な者を家族の中に住まわせる方、その神はこれらの人々を、守り、世話をするようにと命じています。

1992年、私と私の家族、そして通訳者の鈴木麻湖は、『愛の決心』−日本人外国人を問わず、妊娠した女性が事情で子の養育ができない時、愛情ある家族の中で養育されるように、養子縁組のお手伝いをする非営利団体−でボランティアを始めました。『愛の決心』は、子どもを絶対に商品として扱うべきではないという信念の上に創立されました。それゆえ多くの方々が無給で、このような子どもたちのために時間と資源を捧げてくださったことを心から感謝しております。

29年間近く、様々な状況下にある多くの妊娠女性の支援に関わり、多くの子どもたちを新しい家庭に送り出しました。 その中で、ある女性たちは諸事情で子の出生届を出せず、その結果、無国籍となってしまう子供達がいることがわかりました。私たちはそのような子どもたちの戸籍を取得し新しい家族の元に送り出す支援の仕方を学びました。また、障がいを持つ子を出産し、手術や長期の療育が必要なため養育できないと感じている親御さんにもお会いしました。そのような子どもたちのために私たちは、障がい児を養子縁組し養育したいという家族を見つけることができました。私たちも、一人のダウン症の子を含む６人の養子を家族に迎え、私的な里親としても多くの子どもの養育と世話をしてきました。その中で、静岡県立こども病院の素晴らしい循環器／心臓外科チームにより心臓手術を受けた12名以上の子供達、その他の手術や治療を要する子供達を私たちは支援してきました。

現在、日本の養子縁組に関する法律が整備され、特別な必要をもつ子供達の養子縁組のオプションが制限される中、これからも実親が養育できない特別な必要を持つ子供達を世話し、そのような子供達の支援をし続けていくつもりです。

I am very thankful to be a part of this award ceremony and for the wonderful opportunity to meet so many people who have poured out their lives to enrich people in need all over the world.

I came to Japan as a Protestant Christian missionary in 1985, with my husband and three young children. I love children and soon gave birth to two more. I was educated in America as a Registered Physical Therapist and a trained pregnancy counselor. My employment for ten years before arriving in Japan was as a physical therapist for handicapped children and hospital and home care for children and adults. As a Christian living in Japan I thought about God’s love for the Japanese people and realized the needs of pregnant women and their children. The Bible tells us all children are a gift from God and He is described as a father to the fatherless who protects the widows, orphans and foreigners and places the lonely in families. God also instructs us to protect and care for them.

In 1992 our family and Japanese translator, Ako Suzuki, joined a volunteer group, Ai no Kesshin (Loving Decisions), who was helping pregnant women both Japanese and foreign unable to raise their children find loving adoptive families for their babies. ANK was founded on the belief that no child should ever be a commodity. We are so grateful for the many volunteers and friends of ANK who receive no salary and give their time and resources freely for the children.

Over the last twenty-nine years we were able to help many young women in various situations through their pregnancies and the placement of their children. We discovered some women in need could not register their children on their koseki and the children were left with no nationality. We learned how to help those children to receive citizenship and adoption. We also met parents who gave birth to children with various handicaps who felt they were incapable of raising those children because of surgical needs and long-term follow-up care. We were able to find parents wanting to adopt and raise those children.

Also, in our family environment we provided foster care for many children for years and adopted six ourselves, including one who has Down Syndrome.

We have supported 12 or more children through heart surgery by the amazing heart surgery team at Shizuoka Children’s Hospital and supported other children through various needed surgeries.

As laws have changed in Japan child placement options are limited but we are continuing to support and care for children with special needs whose parents are unable to do so.
