Mr.Uday Thakar, Advisor, APAL

I started my leprosy work in the year 1970. During that year I had an opportunity to work with Dr.Baba Amte, a world renowned social activist and one of the founders of leprosy work in India. I worked with him for six years. On his suggestion, since 1982, I devoted my full time to what cause of leprosy and started working with Kushtarog Niwaran Samiti, Shantivan, Panvel. Through Shantivan, we are catering different OPD services to 465patients suffering from ulcers, nerve pain and their reaction. We are working with the Government of India and WHO to eliminate leprosy in Panvel block, consisting of 185villages and a population of 400,000, under the National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP). Up till now we could diagnose 15000 leprosy cases, brought them under treatment and cured them from the disease.

Our Organization is running a rehabilitation Centre at Shantivan, where the training is imparted to needy leprosy patients. The training facility is available for Agricultural, Horticultural, Plumbing, Weaving Tailoring etc. Under this programme, and in collaboration with Hind Kusht Nivaran Sangh and ALH RRE Society, more than 500 patients were successfully rehabilitated in the society and they are living dignified lives.

I am regularly visiting Self Settled Colonies of affected persons. I conducted a survey on Disability Prevention Programme and Micro Credit Programme. I have worked as a committee member on the Rehabilitation Committee constituted by the Government of Maharashtra. At present I am very closely associated with the Association of People Affected by Leprosy (APAL), a National organization registered by Affected Persons. This is the only forum in India which is managed by leprosy affected persons.

I am working in the capacity as an Advisor of APAL and helping them to organize several empowerment workshops, Human Right Workshops, Training Programme, and Capacity Building Workshops for leprosy affected persons at State and National level.

With philanthropic support from Mr. Yohei Sasakawa, WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Leprosy Elimination, I have attended a Geneva Convention on Human Rights & Leprosy & presented a paper on the subject.

About the Ceremony: The ceremony was well planned and organized. It has provided me the opportunity to interact with other persons and organizations working in different fields. Through this Award function, I have learned about tremendous performances in various social fields by many social activists.

This was a celebration that inspired me and there is more work to do in my fields of leprosy for years to come.

Once again thanks for organizing this motivational and inspirational function in Tokyo.

私は1970年にハンセン病に関わる仕事を始めました。その間、世界的に有名な社会活動家であり、ハンセン病に関わる活動の創設者の一人であるDr.Baba Amteと仕事をする機会を得て6年間一緒に働きました。彼の提案で1982年からはハンセン病の原因究明に全力を尽くすため、Kushtarog Niwaran Samiti、Shantivan、Panveldeで仕事を始めました。

シャンティバンでは、潰瘍、神経痛、反応に苦しむ465人の患者さんを往診しています。私たちは、国家ハンセン病撲滅プログラム（NLEP）の下で、185村と人口4万人で構成されるPanvel地区のハンセン病を撲滅するために、インド政府とWHOに協力しています。これまでに15,000件の症例を診断し、それらを治療下に持ち込み、病気から治癒させることができました。

私たちの組織はシャンティバンでリハビリテーションセンターを運営しています。このセンターでは、貧困患者のハンセン病患者に、農業、園芸、配管、製織などのトレーニングを提供しています。このプログラムの下で、Hind Kusht Nivaran SanghとALH RRE Societyと協力して、500人以上の患者が社会復帰に成功し、尊厳のある生活を送っています。

私は定期的に患者たちが自主的に作っている集落を訪問しています。障害予防プログラムとマイクロクレジットプログラムに関する調査を実施しています。

マハラシュトラ州政府が構成するリハビリテーション委員会の委員として働いていました。現在は、APAL（Association of People Affected by Leprocy）と非常に密接に関わっています。APALはハンセン病の罹患者によって運営されている全国的な組織で、インドの唯一のフォーラムです。

私はAPALの顧問としての能力を活かし、ハンセン病の罹患者のためのエンパワメントワークショップ、ヒューマンライトワークショップ、トレーニングプログラム、能力開発ワークショップを州と国レベルで組織するのを手伝っています。

世界保健機関（WHO）ハンセン病制圧大使である笹川陽平氏の慈善支援のおかげで、私は人権とハンセン病に関するジュネーブ条約に出席し、論文を発表することができました。

表彰式典は綿密に計画され良くまとめられていました。違う分野で働く人たちや団体と交流する機会となりました。授賞を通じて、他の多くの社会活動家が様々な分野で驚異的な活動をしていることを学びました。

この式典で、この先ハンセン病の分野でまだまだ出来ることがあると触発されました。
